So here it is, my life in a very small nutshell:
Of course you want to know a little bit of personal information about me. I would too if I were you !
I’ve been a therapist for 26 years. About 18 years have been in private practice.
I am married to a wonderful man, Mark, who organizes and maintains the infrastructure of my life. Without him, well, let’s not even go there!
My office is in our home in Wayne, where we have lived since 2001. I feel very fortunate to be able to practice out of my home. It relaxes everyone and makes it easy for me to be flexible with my schedule. It’s also very private and peaceful.
We have 2 dogs, 3 horses, 2 goats and 2 turkeys in current residence at our little farm that I call “Green Acres” :-). My critters are my ‘therapeutic assistants’, and kids often come back to see the animals even after their therapy sessions are over. When kids & teens come for the first time we usually go out and meet all the animals. I’ve found that it’s a great way to break the ice.
But the critters (especially the dogs) do more than just entertain, they’re an integral part of my therapeutic approach. Animals have been proven to reduce heart rate and blood pressure which makes it much easier for kids (and adults too) to participate in therapy. An added benefit is that no one ever feels like they’re in a therapist’s office when they come to Green Acres!
If you’re allergic or afraid of animals though, don’t worry. The critters don’t take it personally; they’ll be happy to adore you from afar. ;-)
I focus my practice on kids & teens, but I always involve Mom and Dad. Teaching new parenting techniques is a large part of what I do. My goal is for you and your family to function effectively without me.
When I work individually with young children, my door remains open if Mom or Dad are not in the room. It’s a very good idea for them to hear how I speak, and listen to how their child responds. I also ask that parents keep in touch via email at least once a week so I have a clear picture of what’s going on at home in between appointments.
And yes, I work with adults and couples as well. You can’t really separate the child’s behavior from the family. Sometimes a few sessions with other family members works wonders!
However, having a child is not a prerequisite to working with me. I do still regularly counsel adults for a variety of issues. There’s a bit of the kid in all of us :-).
I’m able to help most of the individuals I see. It’s not unusual for my clients to return years later for a ‘tune up’. I always look forward to these visits!
The majority of my clients are referred from other clients. The rest come from my newspaper ad in the ‘Examiner’, other doctors, or insurance provider lists. If you intend to use insurance to pay for your sessions, it’s a good idea to check your benefits. I will file the proper forms for you, but I can’t guarantee payment.
Please feel free to call and ask me any questions you might have. Take a look at “my approach” for more information about my style of counseling.
I look forward to meeting you!
Change happens here!
